Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)
BPD
Do you feel exhausted by the constant ups and downs you experience throughout your day? Do you find it difficult to regulate your emotions and find that your self-image shifts regularly? Have you found yourself having recurring thoughts of suicide or thoughts of self-harm? Is it hard for you to believe that people won’t leave you? Does your loved one have a BPD diagnosis, and do you struggle to know how to support them? Walking through life unsure of how the days events will affect you is incredibly difficult and stressful - it doesn’t have to be this way.
Almost 4 million people in the United States have a BPD diagnosis, and most people with BPD also have additional diagnoses that can make treatment complicated without the right training. While we don’t currently know exactly what causes personality disorders, what we do know is that genetics and brain differences may play a big role, as well as adverse experiences in childhood.
The good news is that we have evidence based practices to treat borderline personality disorder effectively, and our therapists are specially trained to do so. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) was designed specifically for working with clients who have a diagnosis of BPD or who have suicidal tendencies combined with emotional regulation difficulties. One study found that DBT significantly impacted clients’ self-harm behavior, the number of impatient hospital stays, and the severity of symptoms. Our therapists use DBT and DBT skills training to help clients feel confident in their ability to handle the ups and downs of their emotional world and to build a life that they genuinely enjoy living.
Niyyah therapists have been able to help clients heal from decades of trauma related to unknown symptoms BPD in family of origin, as well as help clients with co-occurring disorders stabilize and thrive in mental wellness. Additionally, we have been honored to teach parents how to parent adolescents with BPD traits, and work closely with psychiatrists and other providers to have a collaborative treatment plan. Many clients have come to Niyyah Counseling with feelings of hopelessness and frustration, and they have been able to leave feeling empowered and with the knowledge that they have the coping skills necessary to regulate their emotions and build fulfilling relationships.

Many providers simply don’t know how to treat BPD.
